trip leaders
Our clients tell us that our trip leaders “make the trip.” Alpenwild trip leaders have a wealth of experience in the Alps, they are skilled adventurers, and really a lot of fun. They’re also willing to talk with you in detail about the trip so that you’ll be prepared for the perfect adventure. Their encyclopedic knowlege brings a richly rewarding dimension of history, geology, wildflowers, and local alpine culture into sharp focus. All are trusted outdoor leaders with advanced education and college degrees in relevant areas of expertise. Whether you're hiking the Haute Route, exploring the Jungfrau, eating cheese in Appenzell, or relaxing in in Zermatt on our Best of the Alps tour, they are your key to a great adventure.
greg witt

Greg Witt, adventure guide and author, lives the adventures he writes about. His explorations have taken him to every corner of the globe. He has led mountaineering expeditions in the Alps and Andes and paddled wild rivers in the Americas. He has dropped teams into golden slot canyons, trudged through deep jungles in Africa, Central America, and Asia, and guided archaeological expeditions across the parched Arabian Peninsula. He spends every summer in the Swiss Alps, and is at home on the Haute Route as he is hiking in the Jungfrau, or eating apple strudle in Zermatt.
Greg is the author of 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Salt Lake City and Off the Tourist Trail (US Editor) and Ultimate Adventures: A Rough Guide to Adventure Travel, and his featured releases for 2010 include Exploring Havasupai: A Guide to the Heart of the Grand Canyon and Best Easy Day Hikes: Salt Lake City. His popular video series Haute Route Essentials, has earned him the title "Mr. Haute Route." During the summer of 2010 he became the first North American to receive the Alpsteinpass award for his expertise in hiking and guiding in Appenzell's Alpstein range.
Some weeks, Greg hikes more miles than he drives, which means he wears out his boots faster than he wears out tires. He has crossed the Grand Canyon on foot more than a dozen times, climbed Colorado’s three highest peaks in three days, and while guiding in the Alps in one summer hikes over 700 miles, gaining nearly 100,000 vertical feet—the equivalent of climbing Everest nine times. He is a Wilderness First Responder, a Fellow with the Royal Geographical Society, and a Certified Switzerland Specialist. His passion for adventure always focuses on sharing the experience with others through guiding, and his engaging writing and presentation style.
markus schild
Markus Schild is our expert guide in the Engadine. He’s a certified hiking guide and cross-country ski instructor who is passionate about sharing his love and knowledge of the Engadine valley with Alpenwild clients. Whether it’s hidden valleys, spectacular wildflowers, or abundant wildlife you came to see, Markus can hardly wait to introduce you to the best of the Engadine.
He is known in Switzerland as a leader and innovator in developing the quiet rural valley of the upper Rhone into a world-class cross-country ski destination. He's a patient and insightful cross country ski instructor who can bring out the best in any skier. As a ski guide he can share with you the hidden valleys of the Engadine that only the local aficionados know.
In addition to our popular inn-to-inn tours in the Engadine, he offers an innovative specialty program on goats, allowing you to become an alpine goatherd for a day, and another on the pure spring waters that bring life and health to the Engadine. Markus makes his home in the charming Engadine village of Zuoz.
steve kugath

Steve has always had a passion for Switzerland; its thrilling landscapes, unique history and culture, delectable food, and amazing people. In the last fifteen years he has traveled to Switzerland 25 times…each trip an exciting adventure! In Switzerland, Steve has been a visiting faculty member of the internationally renowned École Hôtelière de Lausanne. And when not in the classroom, Steve loves to venture into the mountains to ski or hike in the Bernese Oberland or the pristine environments around Zermatt and the Valais region.
In the States, Steve has worked as a faculty member of Outdoor Recreation Departments at Indiana University, Western State College of Colorado, and currently BYU-Idaho where he teaches Cross Country & Telemark skiing, Mountaineering & Rock Climbing, Canyoneering, Backpacking, and Canoeing courses. Steve has climbed more than seventy 14,000’+ peaks and has a dozen ascents of the Grand Teton which he can view from the back patio of his home in Rexburg, Idaho. He has been a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) for more than 20 years. His young and active children at home help him keep his trauma management skills fresh as he has never had a serious injury with his clients beyond a blister, cut or the occasional twisted ankle on the trail. When not in Switzerland Steve spends as much time as he can in the Teton and Yellowstone backcountry with his wife Serena and his 9 children hiking, climbing, paddling and skiing.
Steve's addiction to the amazing cheese from the Gruyère region of Switzerland will no doubt keep him coming back to guide clients in the Alps for many years to come. .
