jura Discovery
A forested wonderland for hikers getting off the beaten path
June 12-19, 2012
What—you’ve never heard of the Jura? You certainly should have. Although not in the Alps, the Jura affords the best views of the Alps in all of Switzerland.
Situated most anywhere else in the world, these mountains would stand out as statuesque sentinels and draw visitors by the droves; but this range of gentle peaks is in the shadow of the Alps, and as a result simply hasn’t received the attention it deserves—until now.
The Jura’s distinct personality is a blend of all those who have lived here and loved these mountains. Though not in France, you’ll find some of the world’s finest French cuisine here. Though not German, this is the enclave of Swiss watchmakers. As soon as you settle in you begin to notice a strong feeling of heritage as they speak of centuries as casually as the passing of seasons.
It’s rich with history—but it’s a history of the unusual and offbeat; things like music boxes, asphalt mining, absinthe, and of course cheese—perhaps the finest cheese in Switzerland…or dare we say, the world. A meal would hardly be complete without a taste of Vacherin Mont d’Or.
The Jura Mountains stretch between the Rhine and the Rhône across Switzerland’s northern border with France. The Jura Mountains are old, with its name clearly linked to the Jurassic period of geologic time. It’s a range dotted with caves—the largest in Switzerland—and covered with forests and fascinating limestone features and geologic wonders. With the longest hiking season of any Swiss mountain region, it’s the perfect choice for a spring or fall getaway.
The hikes lead you through dense larch forests, mysterious caves, plunging waterfalls, tranquil lakes, and languid rivers. Songbirds fly overhead. And of course, each day concludes with the satisfaction of exquisitely prepared food and world famous Swiss hospitality.
