Farm Stays |
Make yourself at home on a Swiss farm |

Swiss Hiking for independent travelers
The Swiss have a name for it – Schlaf im Stroh or sleeping in the straw. It consists of clean, comfortable accommodations in farmhouses, and yes, sometimes even in the barn and sleeping right in the straw, with a comfortable blanket on top and bottom. Your host family will also provide meals and even involve you in the activities and day-to-day life of a working farm. Alpenwild offers farm stay and agritourism programs in the Bernese Oberland, Appenzell, and Valais. Additionally, two of our guided tours--Oberland Adventure and Savoring Switzerland, Trails, Vineyards, and Farm Tables of Valais--provide an excellent taste of traditional alpine farm life.
There’s no better way to work up an appetite for a hearty Swiss breakfast than to milk the cows or pitch some hay. Then it’s off to explore the nearby countryside, on horseback, bicycle, or with walks that are well suited to all ages and designed to unfold both the exquisite natural beauty of the region, the human history, and traditional lifestyle of Swiss farmers. |

Farm Stays |
Make yourself at home on a Swiss farm |

|
Alpenwild farm stays are part of a vibrant and growing agritourism phenomena in Switzerland. Our programs, and others like them, help secure the economic viability of small farms, especially those in alpine communities. You’ll be able to participate in farm activities ranging from picking fruit, to milking cows, making cheese, or tending a vineyard.
More importantly, you’ll experience what it means to be part of the land. As you learn how your food is produced you’ll become a better consumer and more appreciative of the talents and efforts of those whose lives are dedicated to agriculture. If you or your children have never harvested grapes, gathered eggs, milked a goat, or made your own cheese, you’re in for a real treat.
It all adds up to an absolutely unforgettable and uniquely charming vacation. It’s perfect for couples or families, either for a week or as a 1-3 day add-on to your Alpenwild hiking or walking adventure.
For more on farm stays in Switzerland read what our friend and travel writer Gigi Ragland has to say in Agritourism Explained and Explored, then contact us to book your spot in the straw. |
