Venice Airport

Venice Italy

Venice Airport is Taking Flight as a Leading Alps Gateway

When you’re planning a hiking vacation in the Alps, one of the first questions you’ll want to answer is “which airport do I fly into?” And depending on your overall travel plan, the answer is generally Zurich or Geneva. But another major airport is quickly rising into the ranks of gateway airports to the Alps—Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE).

As more travelers add the Italian Dolomites and Slovenia’s Julian Alps to their Alps hiking wish list, Venice stands out as the perfect arrival choice for those two less-frequented Alps hiking regions. From Venice airport it’s just two hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo in the heart of the Dolomites, and about two and a half hours to Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana, its most popular tourist center in Bled, or it’s adventure hub in Bovec.

Rising Popularity

Venice is such a popular cruise port and leisure destination that its airport is served by over 50 international airlines, including European discount carriers such as easyJet and Volotea. Venice Marco Polo Airport also features non-stop flights from New York City JFK, Newark, Atlanta, and Philadelphia so you’re likely to find reliable connections and competitive fares from your nearest major airport in the US.

We are Trip Logistic Experts

Since most Alpenwild guests do some sort of pre- or post-tour travel in conjunction with their Alps hiking vacation, Venice is the natural choice a few days of scenic, cultural, and culinary enjoyment. If you’re deciding which end of the tour to place your Venice stay, we recommend do it prior to the start of your tour. That way, you’ll have a few relaxing days in Venice to overcome jet lag prior to your hiking tour. Additionally, when it comes to connecting with transatlantic flight schedules, a Venice stay works best at the start of your travels.

Venice is often described as the most beautiful city in the world—but it’s also one of the most inconvenient cities in the world. Even though the airport is less than five miles from St Mark’s Square, the canal, and the tourist hub of the city, it’s difficult to figure out how to get from the Airport to your hotel unless you’ve done it before or have expert assistance.

No Headache Needed

Venice is not just a car-free city, it’s a mandatory walking city—not even bicycles, scooters, or skateboards are allowed in Venice. So when you transfer from the airport to your hotel, go with specific directions in hand. Know exactly which bus, train, boat, water taxi, or vaporetto you’ll need to take. And make sure you can manage your luggage on your own once you’re dropped off at the stop nearest your hotel. For most visitors arriving at Venice Marco Polo Airport and transferring to a hotel in the city, you’ll be taking the Alilaguna boat service from their port at the Venice Airport. But make sure you have all the details pinned down before you arrive. That way you’ll make the most of your time and have the best possible experience in Venice.

At Alpenwild, we ensure that the details of your Alpenwild adventure (whether guided or self-guided) are pinned down before you go. We help you avoid the headache of trip planning. Got questions?
