And though I oft have passed them by, A day will come at last when I, Shall take the hidden paths that run, West of the Moon, East of the Sun. - J.R.R. Tolkien
Much of JRR Tolkien's fascinating world was conceived in Switzerland. It's based on a formative trip the author made in 1911 at the age of 19. You can still find this world today in the Swiss Alps if you know where to look.
Following Tolkien's route we embark on a journey where you'll explore Interlaken, the Jungfrau, the Eiger, Grimselpass, and the upper Rhone, before concluding in Zermatt at the base of the Matterhorn. We are guests at a new Tolkien museum and explore Tolkien's legendary landscapes on scenic trains such as the Glacier Express and the Goldenpass Line.
The magnificent snowcapped peaks of the Alps, the surging waterfalls and powerful glaciers are as likely to fire your imagination as they did Tolkien's. You'll travel in comfort and in the company of expert trip leaders and knowledgeable guides. You'll enjoy first class rail and hotels throughout.
Our expert guide is Alex Lewis, Chairman of the Tolkien Society of UK from 1988-92, and author of three books of Tolkien studies: Uncharted Realms of Tolkien (2002) Forsaken Realm of Tolkien (2005), and Epic Realm of Tolkien (2009). Alex is currently the Secretary of the Tolkien Society and writing a biography of Tolkien due out later this year. An Oxford born and educated writer, he currently lives on the border of Wales and England.
