FAQ

How difficult is the Best of the Swiss Alps tour?

This tour is rated as Easy to Moderate. Daily hikes are generally 4–6 miles (6–10 km) with modest elevation changes. You should feel comfortable walking for 2–4 hours at a relaxed pace, with breaks, on well-maintained trails. Most hikes are optional, and there's ample flexibility for rest or alternate activities.

What is the maximum group size?

We keep our group sizes small and personal, with a maximum of 13 participants. This allows for a more relaxed pace, individualized attention, and smoother logistics.

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour begins in Grindelwald and ends in Zermatt. We include a rail pass to get you from your arrival airport (GVA or ZRH) to Grindelwald and from Zermatt to your departure airport (GVA or ZHR). We’ll provide detailed instructions and support for booking trains if needed.

Do I need hiking experience?

No technical hiking experience is necessary, but it is beneficial. The terrain is gentle to moderate, and our expert guides tailor the pace to the group’s ability. If you’re in good health and enjoy walking, you’ll do great.

Anything quirky or unexpected about Swiss hotels I should know about?

Yes—bedding in Switzerland is a bit different than what you might be used to in the US. In most hotels, a standard double room includes two European single beds (each 90cm x 200cm) placed side by side to form a large bed—roughly the size of an American king. Most beds are topped with their own fluffy eiderdown comforter inside a duvet cover. It’s warm, cozy, and typical across the country. If you run warm at night, you can always open a window, fold back the comforter, and use just the sheet for a lighter covering.

Activity Level

We rate this trip as moderate but also adaptable to those who want easier or longer hikes on some days. Please note that the stats listed on the itinerary can vary, depending on the guide and desires of our hikers. You should be capable of walking 4 to 6 hours per day on well-groomed and graded trails at an elevation up to 9,000 feet above sea level. On one day a mountain railway takes you to an elevation of 11,400 feet to the Jungfraujoch.
