3 Cultures, 3 Languages, and 3,000 Years of History

Traverse through the German-, Romansch-, and Italian-speaking villages of the Upper Engadin, the Val Bregaglia, and the Swiss-Italian border. Soak in romantic views and hike off the beaten path between St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Chiavenna, Italy.

Self-Guided Independence Combined With Convenience

Our staff in the Alpenwild Office will handle your logistics so that you can enjoy the trail, worry free. Hike without a group and enjoy a quieter, more intimate experience with this beautiful, lesser-known region of Switzerland. Hotels, luggage transfers, and even most meals will be taken care of for you, ahead of time. If weather is bad or you’re not up to hiking one day, you’ll easily be able to get from place to place using the reliable Swiss public transportation.

Charming Villages in the Swiss & Italian Alps

Set in a high valley amidst the Bernina Alps, St Moritz is legendary as a winter resort, and even more beautiful in the summer, as sunlight bounces off the lakes and mountains. In summer there is always excitement in the air with vintage car shows, sporting events, and a string of exclusive fashion boutiques on Via Serlas, the St Moritz shopping mile. The hustle and bustle quickly quiets as you depart St Moritz and head down the Engadin valley towards Sils Maria, a small, charming village between Lake Sils and Silvaplana. Continue the next day towards the sleepy town of Maloja, situated at the Maloja pass, famous for its history of smuggling.  You’ll traverse alpine meadows and sparkling streams on your way through the Val Bregaglia towards Italy.

Where History and Nature Meet

At the Maloja Pass (pronounced “ma-LOY-ya”) we stay in a hotel with a history of hospitality dating back more than 140 years. The Maloja Pass was the domain of traders and smugglers for most of the past 200 years but now is a haven for relaxing outdoor activities. A descent from the Maloja Pass takes us into the peaceful Val Bregaglia (pronounced “bray-GAHL-ya”).

Val Bregaglia is steeped in history and dotted with quaint villages, terraced gardens, and charming palazzos that once belonged to the valley's wealthy families. We'll spend the night in one of those palazzos, situated Soglio, the “threshold to paradise.” Your descent from Soglio takes you down the valley before arriving in the medieval town of Chiavenna, Italy.
