How do I book this tour?

Start by contacting us to establish your preferred dates and itinerary. We will then send you a trip proposal with booking instructions. A $500 deposit is required to secure your reservation.

What does a typical day on this trip look like?

Each morning, a buffet breakfast will be provided at your hotel. You'll then embark for your hike. Some days will involve a scenic cable car or short bus ride to get to the trailhead. You'll hike most of the day, crossing alpine pastures, sparkling streams, and old stone villages. We'll provide detailed route instructions and GPX files, as well as recommendations for water stops and lunch options. Most days, you'll get to your next hotel in the afternoon, leaving time to shower and rest up a bit before a nice multi-course dinner. Dinner is usually a set menu, which enables you to try local Swiss and Italian specialties. Enjoy your charming hotel, and rest up for another day of fantastic hiking and diverse scenery.

How far will I hike each day?

You'll average about 7 miles per day - some days will be longer or shorter. Reference the itinerary for more specific hiking stats. Please note that the stats we provide may vary from what you record on the trip based on what device you use, or if you take an alternate route based on weather or other factors. Use our listed stats as an estimate and a reference point when training for this hiking trip.

Should I have prior hiking experience?

Yes, this trip is best suited for hikers with previous experience. If you've trained on steep terrain and taken long day hikes, you'll enjoy this rewarding adventure.

Will I need to hike every day?

As an inn-to-inn trip, most days will require hiking to get to the next hotel. You will have a rest day halfway through the trip, where hiking is optional. If you are unable to hike one day, it's possible to take public transportation to your next hotel. Extra transportation outside of the tour schedule is not included in your tour price, so you will be responsible for covering that cost.

How do I get to St. Moritz?

This tour starts in St. Moritz, Switzerland. You'll want to fly into Zurich (ZRH) which is the most convenient airport for arrival. We provide a 1-day Swiss rail pass which you can use to get from Zurich to st. Moritz (a 3.5-4 hour train journey). Please plan your arrival flights accordingly.

What does departure look like?

Your trip ends back in St. Moritz, Switzerland. After hiking to Chiavenna, you'll journey back to St. Moritz for a convenient departure. St. Moritz is connected to the seamless Swiss rail system, and it's also a great starting point if you wish to embark on a scenic train journey, like the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express. We provide a 1-day Swiss rail pass for your departure, which you can use to exit St. Moritz.

Are luggage transfers included?

Yes, luggage transfers are included on this trip. We include transfers for 1 suitcase per person. Each suitcase must be under 44 pounds. If you need more than one suitcase per person, let us know and we can arrange for that. Extra suitcases that aren't pre-arranged and paid for will be left behind.

How should I pack?

Be prepared to hike, and don't forget your rain gear, just in case! A detailed packing list will be sent to you after you book your trip. Your luggage will be transferred between your hotels, so you won't need to hike with much more on your back than water, sunscreen, snacks, and layers. Your luggage transfer includes 1 bag per person, which must weigh less than 20 kg (44 pounds). If you anticipate needing more than 1 bag per person, contact us and we will add to your luggage transfer booking.

Do I need to carry all my gear?

No. We provide luggage transfers as a part of this tour. You'll only need to hike with a daypack, as your suitcases will be driven between your hotels.

Will I need to carry my suitcase to my room?

2 of the hotels on this trip are historic buildings without an elevator, so you will need to carry your suitcase upstairs to your room. These historic hotels (one of which is a palazzo) are beautifully charming, and often a highlight for our guests!

What is the single supplement?

Our tour price assumes two people will share a hotel room and the cost of luggage transfers. If you are traveling solo, the single supplement covers the additional rooming and luggage transfer cost.

Do I need to know another language for this trip?

In Europe, it's fairly simple to get around even if you only speak English. However, you'll pass through 3 language regions on this hiking trip - German, Romansch, and Italian. Any locals you come across will appreciate a friendly "hello" or "thank you" in the local language. Try swapping hello with "gruezi" (German), "allegra" (Romansch,) and "buongeorno" or "buonasera" (Italian).
