FAQ

What airport should I fly into?

Most guests fly into Chania International Airport (CHQ), which is the closest and most convenient airport. Airport transfers on Day 1 and Day 10 are included.

When should I arrive?

The tour begins with an orientation and welcome dinner in Chania on the afternoon of Day 1. We recommend arriving by early afternoon to settle in and enjoy the old town.

What is the hiking difficulty?

This is a moderate to strenuous hiking trip with a mix of coastal paths, gorge hikes, and summit days. Distances range from short walking days around town to full-day hikes of 5–10 miles with significant ascent and descent.

What are the toughest hiking days?

  • Day 3: Aradena Gorge ascent — steep and rugged.

  • Day 4: Summit of Pachnes — high altitude and 7 miles round trip.

  • Day 6: Samaria Gorge — long 10-mile traverse with sustained ascent.

  • Day 7: Gigolos summit — demanding but spectacular.

If you’re comfortable with rocky terrain and sustained climbs, you’ll do great.

What type of accommodations can I expect?

You’ll stay in a mix of:

  • Charming harborside hotels in Chania

  • Cozy guesthouses in mountain villages

  • Comfortable small hotels in Omalos and coastal towns

Rooms typically have private bathrooms except in a few remote guesthouses where configurations vary.

Do we need to carry our luggage?

No. Your main luggage is transported for you. You’ll carry only a day pack each day with water, layers, and personal essentials.

Are meals included?

Most meals are included.

  • B = Breakfast

  • S = Snack or packed lunch

  • D = Dinner

A few dinners are intentionally left open so you can enjoy local tavernas.

What is the terrain like?

Crete’s terrain is rugged, rocky, and dramatic. Expect:

  • Narrow coastal paths

  • Rocky gorges

  • Stone steps

  • High-alpine gravel trails
Good hiking shoes with excellent traction are essential.

How do boat transfers work?

The itinerary includes a few taxi-boat and private boat transfers to reach remote coves and villages. All boat travel is arranged in advance and included in the trip.

Do I need hiking poles?

Yes, highly recommended. Many hikes include steep ascents and descents on rocky ground. Trekking poles are available for rental--please request this at least 30 days in advance.

How fit should I be?

You should be comfortable:

  • Walking 6–10 miles

  • Managing 2,000–4,000 feet of elevation in a day

  • Hiking on rocky, uneven terrain

Training with stair climbs or hill workouts is helpful.

What is the typical group size?

Groups are usually 8–13 guests, allowing for a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

What is the weather like in this part of Crete?

In the hiking season (spring and fall), temperatures are usually 70–80°F (21–27°C) at the coast and cooler in the mountains. Conditions can vary daily, so layers are important.

Do I need cash?

Many tavernas and shops accept cards, but remote villages may prefer cash. Having some euros on hand is recommended.

What happens on the final day?

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to Chania or Chania Airport for onward travel. We recommend afternoon flights to allow for a relaxed morning.

Activity Level

We rate this trip as moderately strenuous. You should be capable of walking 5-6 hours per day on well-groomed and graded trails and in small villages and towns with cobblestone or uneven paved surfaces.
