FAQ

Is this an inn to inn hiking tour?

No, this tour is centered in the village of Mayrhofen, with day hikes planned each day. There is an option to stay in a remote mountain hotel during the tour. Most hikes are flexible, allowing you to hike as much or as little as you wish.

How do I get to Mayrhofen?

The nearest major airport is Innsbruck Airport (about 1.5 hours by train). Other options include Munich Airport (around 3.5 hours by train) or Salzburg Airport (around 3 hours). From the airport or nearby cities, you can reach Mayrhofen by train, bus, or taxi. The village is well-connected, making it easy to start your hikes from there.

The tour comes with an Austria rail Pass to get to/from Austria. However, if you arrive in Munich, we can usually change the Austria rail pass to have point-to-point tickets instead. No matter which direction you travel from, you will arrive in Jenbach and transfer to the Zillertalbahn train to reach Mayrhofen.

How will I travel around Mayrhofen?

We include a 6-day Zillertal Activcard, which covers all buses and cable cars around Mayrhofen. A few cable cars are located right in the village, providing easy access to the start of some hikes. On most days, a short bus ride will be needed to reach the recommended hiking routes.

What meals are included?

Breakfast at the hotel is included each morning, along with a half-board dinner. Dinners are typically served as a set menu, though limited choices are often available. Picnic supplies can be easily purchased at the grocery store in Mayrhofen, or you can enjoy lunch at one of the many mountain restaurants along the hiking routes.

What currency is needed?

Austria uses the Euro. ATMs, commonly found at banks, grocery stores, and train stations, usually offer the best exchange rates. While credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants, it’s advisable to carry some cash for mountain restaurants, where cards may not be accepted.

What is the remote mountain hotel like?

We offer the option to stay at the Berliner Hütte during your time in Mayrhofen. You will check out of your Mayrohofen hotel, which can hold your luggage until your return. Carry only what you need for the night and hike to the hut for your overnight stay.

The Berliner Hütte, at 2,042?m in the Zemmgrund valley, is a historic alpine hut dating back to 1878 and now a protected monument. This mountain hut offers dramatic views of the surrounding glaciers, peaks, and the Zillertal Alps. We’ll reserve a private room for you; payment is in cash at the hut. Bathrooms are shared with a separate one for the ladies and for the gentlemen.

Activity Level

We rate this trip as moderate. You should be a strong and experienced hiker in good physical condition. You should be capable of walking 4 to 6 hours per day on good trails, ascending up to about 3,000 vertical feet per day, at an elevation up to 9,000 feet above sea level.
