FAQ

How should I train for the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a strenuous multi-day trek, so proper preparation is key to enjoying the experience. We recommend a combination of cardio, strength, and hiking-specific training:

  • Cardio: Build endurance with long walks, hikes, running, or cycling. Aim for 3–5 sessions per week, gradually increasing duration and intensity.

  • Hiking practice: Include hikes with elevation gain, ideally carrying a loaded daypack (10–15 lbs). Focus on trails with steep ascents and descents to mimic the TMB terrain.

  • Strength training: Work on legs, core, and balance—think squats, lunges, step-ups, planks, and stability exercises. Strong muscles help prevent fatigue and injury.

  • Stamina: Plan for 6–8 hours of hiking at a steady pace, practicing on consecutive days if possible.

If you train consistently, your body will be ready for 2,500–4,200 feet of daily elevation change while hiking up to 8,000–9,000 feet above sea level. Trekking poles are highly recommended for support on long descents and steep climbs.

How will I receive important tour information?

Alpenwild keeps you well-informed leading up to your trek. You’ll receive two newsletters prior to your tour with essential updates, tips, and helpful reminders.

In addition, you’ll get access to your personalized Vamoos portal 3–6 weeks before departure. This portal includes a tour itinerary, packing lists, accommodation details, and other key trip information, so you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips before and during your journey.

What do I do if I can't hike one day?

If you’re unable to hike on a given day, you’ll need to arrange and cover the cost of your own transportation—typically by public bus, train, or private taxi—to reach the next accommodation. Your guides will be happy to help you identify the best available option based on your location and timing.

Do I have to hike every day?

Yes. This is a point-to-point trekking tour, which means each day (besides your rest day) involves hiking to reach the next hotel. Transportation to replace hiking is not included, so it’s important to be prepared to hike daily. We strongly recommend training ahead of time to ensure you’re ready for the physical demands of the route.

If you’re recovering from an injury or have concerns about your hiking ability, please let us know — we may be able to recommend a less strenuous tour for you.

What is a Single Supplement?

The Single Supplement is an additional fee for guests who prefer their own room. Since our prices are based on double occupancy, solo travelers who request a private room will pay this supplement to cover the full room cost.

Which airport should I fly into?

You'll want to fly into and out of Geneva (GVA) to board the shuttle to Chamonix. It's just a 90-minute shuttle ride, included in your tour.

Should I purify water on the trail?

Tap water along the TMB is clean and safe. Most days, you'll have an opportunity to fill up on the trail, but your guide can let you know which days you'll need to carry all the water you need for the day.

Can you accommodate special diets?

Yes. Let us know in advance and we’ll make every effort to accommodate your dietary needs. Whether vegetarian, gluten-free, or managing specific allergies, we’ve successfully worked with many guests to ensure safe and delicious meals throughout the trip.

What gear do I need to bring? What’s provided?

We’ll send you a detailed packing list prior to departure. You’ll need hiking clothes, rain gear, and a comfortable daypack. Alpenwild provides group gear like trail snacks, first aid kits, navigational tools, and water purification (if needed). Trekking poles are strongly recommended.

What’s the hiking pace like? Can I keep up?

We design the Deluxe Tour du Mont Blanc to be both challenging and rewarding, with some limited adaptability built into the itinerary. On certain days, there may be options to shorten the hike using local transport, such as a cable car or public bus. Each morning, your guides will review the day’s route and discuss available options.

Keep in mind that while a few stages can be shortened, they cannot be skipped entirely—this is a point-to-point trek. Transportation to replace a day’s hike is not included in the tour price. If a guest requires alternate transport (such as a private shuttle, public bus, or taxi), they will be responsible for the cost, and guides will gladly help arrange logistics.

We rate this trip as strenuous, with limited adaptability and vehicle support. You should be an experienced hiker in good physical condition, capable of walking 6–8 hours per day on well-maintained trails with steep ascents and descents averaging 2,500–4,200 vertical feet per day, at elevations up to 8,000–9,000 feet above sea level. Trekking poles are highly recommended.

For pacing, assume:

  • 2.5 miles per hour on flat terrain

  • 1,200 feet of ascent per hour

  • 2,000 feet of descent per hour

You can view example hiking statistics and route profiles on Alpenwild’s AllTrails page (distances and elevation gains may vary slightly).

What about altitude?

The Deluxe Tour du Mont Blanc reaches mountain passes up to about 8,300 feet (2,530 meters), with most hiking taking place between 4,000 and 7,000 feet. While you may notice the thinner air at higher elevations, serious altitude effects are uncommon on this route. Some guests experience mild symptoms such as shortness of breath or light fatigue, which usually pass quickly.

We recommend arriving in Chamonix a day early to rest, recover from jet lag, and allow your body time to adjust before starting the trek.

What is the typical group size?

We keep our groups small, booking only six guest rooms in advance—typically resulting in 6 to 12 guests per tour. This allows for a more personal experience, fostering camaraderie, flexibility, and attentive guidance throughout the journey. With as few as nine guests, we provide two guides, giving hikers the freedom to move at different paces while remaining fully supported.

Please note that each Alpenwild tour requires a minimum of 6 guests to guarantee the tour’s departure.

How many miles do we hike per day?

We typically cover 7 to 12 miles per day, with 3,000 to 4,000 feet of elevation gain. You’ll cross high alpine passes and descend into scenic valleys, but with a luxury bed and gourmet dinner awaiting you each night. Daily distances and elevation profiles are provided on the itinerary.

Do I need technical climbing skills?

No climbing experience is required. The Deluxe Tour du Mont Blanc is a trekking route, not a mountaineering route. There may be short sections of rocky or steep terrain where you’ll use your hands for balance (a bit of “scrambling”), but no ropes or harnesses are ever needed. Our guides help ensure your comfort and safety throughout.

What does “BLD” mean in the itinerary?

“BLD” indicates that Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included that day. Alpenwild’s “lunch” is either a restaurant/hut lunch, or a delicious picnic lunch on the trail—fresh bread, local cheeses, fruit, and chocolate. Dinners are highlights of the trip, ranging from cozy mountain fare to refined regional dishes at charming inns and hotels.

Will I have to carry all my gear?

No. Alpenwild provides daily luggage transfers, so you only carry a light daypack with your essentials (water, snacks, jacket, etc.). Your main luggage will be waiting for you at your next hotel—even on the high mountain days, since we skip the hut stays entirely.

Do I need prior hiking experience?

Yes, prior hiking experience is strongly recommended. The Deluxe Tour du Mont Blanc is a strenuous trek, with daily ascents of 3,000–4,000 feet and hikes averaging 7–12 miles. While you don’t need technical skills, a solid fitness base and experience with long day hikes in mountainous terrain will make your trip more enjoyable. We welcome active hikers who are ready for a challenge, but with all the comforts waiting at day’s end.
