What a trip we had! Alpenwild did such a great job making it happen with style! You were especially considerate of our slower pace and we appreciated that. - C.M. - Washington

FAQ

What’s the difference between Alpenwild's Deluxe Haute Route and other versions?

The Deluxe Haute Route is for hikers who want a higher level of comfort and service while still experiencing the rugged trails and scenic grandeur of the Haute Route. Unlike the Classic Haute Route, this version avoids mountain huts, offers private hotel rooms every night. In order to avoid overnighting in mountain huts, we've scheduled some short shuttles to supplement on distance and handpicked the most scenic and rewarding sections of the trail. You'll see the best of the Haute Route and be led by experienced Alpenwild guides who not only ensure your safety but enrich the experience with local knowledge, insights, and personal attention.

What kind of accommodations will we stay in?

The Deluxe Haute Route features comfortable accommodations with private rooms every night—no dormitories, no huts. You’ll stay in chalet-style inns and boutique hotels in picturesque alpine villages. One night of this trip will be spent in a rustic mountain hotel with private rooms but shared bathrooms - this is the only night with shared bathrooms.

Do I need prior hiking experience?

Yes, prior hiking experience is strongly recommended. The Deluxe Haute Route is a strenuous trek, with daily ascents of 3,000–4,000 feet and hikes averaging 7–12 miles. While you don’t need technical skills, a solid fitness base and experience with long day hikes in mountainous terrain will make your trip more enjoyable. We welcome active hikers who are ready for a challenge, but with all the comforts waiting at day’s end.

Do I need technical climbing skills?

No climbing experience is required. The Deluxe Haute Route is a trekking route, not a mountaineering route. There may be short sections of rocky or steep terrain where you’ll use your hands for balance (a bit of “scrambling”), but no ropes or harnesses are ever needed. Our guides help ensure your comfort and safety throughout.

How many miles do we hike per day?

We typically cover 7 to 12 miles per day, with 3,000 to 4,000 feet of elevation gain. You’ll cross high alpine passes and descend into scenic valleys, but with a luxury bed and gourmet dinner awaiting you each night. Daily distances and elevation profiles are provided on the itinerary.

What are my options if I can't hike one day?

In the event that you’re unable to hike one day, you’ll be responsible for covering the cost of your own transportation (such as a public bus or private taxi) to the next accommodation. Our guides can assist you with recommendations. Please note that riding with the luggage service is unfortunately not permitted, as drivers can be fined for taking passengers.

Do I have to hike every day?

Yes. This is a point-to-point trekking tour, which means each day (besides your rest day) involves hiking to reach the next hotel or mountain hut. Transportation to replace hiking is not included, so it’s important to be prepared to hike daily. We strongly recommend training ahead of time to ensure you’re ready for the physical demands of the route.

If you’re recovering from an injury or have concerns about your hiking ability, please let us know — we may be able to recommend a less strenuous tour for you.

What is a Single Supplement?

The Single Supplement is an additional fee for guests who prefer their own room. Since our prices are based on double occupancy, solo travelers who request a private room will pay this supplement to cover the full room cost.

Which airport should I fly into?

You'll want to fly into Geneva (GVA) to board the shuttle to Chamonix. It's just a 90-minute shuttle ride, included in your tour. From Zermatt at the end of the trip, you can fly out of Geneva or Zurich with the train ticket we provide. Both are about 4 hours from Zermatt by train.

What gear do I need to bring? What’s provided?

We’ll send you a detailed packing list prior to departure. You’ll need hiking clothes, rain gear, and a comfortable daypack. Alpenwild provides group gear like trail snacks, first aid kits, navigational tools, and water purification (if needed). Trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Will I have to carry all my gear?

No. Alpenwild provides daily luggage transfers, so you only carry a light daypack with your essentials (water, snacks, jacket, etc.). Your main luggage will be waiting for you at your next hotel—even on the high mountain days, since we skip the hut stays entirely.

Will I be able to do laundry on the tour?

Yes - we provide a laundry service at the hotel on Day 5 of the trip. Eeach room is permitted 1 bag of laundry, which the hotel will wash and return to you the next day.

What about altitude?

The Deluxe Haute Route crosses passes up to 10,000 feet. Most hiking is between 4,000 and 8,000 feet. If you're not acclimated to altitude, you may feel winded or experience mild symptoms like headaches or nausea. These typically subside after the first few days. We encourage guests to arrive a day early to help acclimate and reduce jet lag.

Will I be able to keep up?

We design the Deluxe Haute Route to be both challenging and somewhat adaptable. Some days have options to shorten the hike using local transport. Each morning, your guides will go over the day’s route and discuss available options. From time to time you'll be able to take a cable car or a bus to reduce the day's mileaage. Keep in mind that while some of the hikes can be shortened, they cannot be removed. Transportation to replace hiking entirely is not included in the price of this trip.

Should I purify water on the trail?

Tap water in Switzerland is exceptionally clean and safe. Most days, you'll have an opportunity to fill up on the trail, but your guide can let you know which days you'll need to carry all the water you need for the day.

Can you accommodate special diets?

Yes. Let us know in advance and we’ll make every effort to accommodate your dietary needs. Whether vegetarian, gluten-free, or managing specific allergies, we’ve successfully worked with many guests to ensure safe and delicious meals throughout the trip. Please keep in mind that the Swiss alpine diet centers on cheese, potatoes, and bread - it's possible to accommodate dairy and gluten-free diets, but options may be limited.

Should I tip my guides?

Tips are always appreciated, but never required. Your Alpenwild guides go above and beyond to make sure your trip is an exceptional experience; a tip is a thoughtful way to show your gratitude.

What is the typical group size?

We keep groups small—usually 6 to 12 guests. A group needs a minimum of 6 guests to run, and will never exceed 14 guests. This ensures a high level of personal attention, camaraderie, and flexibility. With as few as 9 guests, we provide two guides, allowing hikers to move at different paces while staying fully supported.

What does “BSD” mean on the itinerary?

“BSD” stands for Breakfast, Snack, and Dinner. Each morning begins with a generous Swiss breakfast. During the hike, we provide trail snacks and a gourmet mountain picnic featuring local cheeses, meats, fresh bread, fruit, and chocolate. Dinners are multi-course affairs in cozy inns and local restaurants, often featuring regional specialties. Food is a highlight of this tour, and guests frequently rave about the quality and variety.
