Testimonials

Our guide's leadership, trail expertise, and ability to "read" the group and adjust was just amazing. I really appreciate how they were able to accommodate the different skill and endurance levels in our group so that each of us were able to truly enjoy our trip. - T.L. - Washington

FAQ

How difficult is this tour?

The Exploring the Jungfrau Tour in Switzerland is considered moderate in difficulty. The hikes are on well-marked trails, but there’s some elevation change and alpine terrain, which requires sound hiking ability and good fitness. Participants should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day on well-maintained trails at elevations up to 9,000 feet. Daily hikes average 5–8 miles with some moderate elevation gain up to 3,000 feet. The most demanding day is the hike to Berghotel Obersteinberg, which involves fairly steep terrain, stairs, and requires steady endurance.

Where does the tour begin?

The Exploring the Jungfrau tour begins in the charming village of Lauterbrunnen and concludes in the town of Meiringen. Your package includes a 1-day rail pass to travel to Lauterbrunnen and another 1-day rail pass from Meiringen to your departure airport (either GVA or ZHR). We’ll provide detailed instructions and recommendations for train schedules. Seat reservations are not required in Switzerland, so there’s no need to book in advance. Each 1-day rail pass is valid only on its designated travel date, but can be used for unlimited travel throughout Switzerland on that day.

In addition, you’ll receive a Swiss Half Fare Card, which gives you discounted rates on additional train tickets, buses, and mountain excursions. This card can be used for any extra days you spend in Switzerland before or after your tour.

How many people will be in our group?

We keep our group size small, with a maximum of 12-13 guests, so that you can receive the highest level of service and attention. Please note that a minimum of 6 guests is required for the tour to be confirmed.

Will I need to carry my luggage?

We include luggage transfers on all our hiking tours, allowing you to walk with only the essentials while your main bags are transported for you. On the Exploring the Jungfrau tour, you won’t have access to your luggage during your stay at the mountain hotel Obersteinberg. However, once you complete your hut stay, you’ll arrive at your next hotel to find your bags waiting for you.

We recommend one rolling suitcase (max 20 kg/44 pounds, ideally 25-26 inch size) for the luggage transfers, plus your day backpack to hike with each day.

Can special dietary needs be accommodated?

Yes, if notified in advance. While Swiss cuisine is mostly dairy-based, we can accommodate allergies and special diets, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and lactose-free options. Vegan choices are limited but usually available.

What types of hotels do we stay in?

We stay in 3- and 4-star, independently owned Swiss hotels renowned for their charm, comfort, and prime locations. Guests can expect warm hospitality, alpine character, and authentic cuisine.

Please note:

  • Most hotels do not have air conditioning, though rooms are usually ventilated with openable windows.

  • Bathrooms generally feature deep tubs with hand-held showers rather than walk-in showers.

  • Berghotel Obersteinberg is a mountain hotel where guests will have private rooms but shared bathrooms.

What is the Berghotel Obersteinberg like?

Berghotel Obersteinberg is a historic, car-free mountain inn nestled above Lauterbrunnen in the Swiss Alps. Accessible only by foot, it offers a traditional alpine experience with rustic charm, candlelit rooms, and stunning views of glaciers and waterfalls. Guests stay in private rooms, with shared bathrooms located on each floor. Staying here feels like stepping back in time—there’s no electricity or Wi-Fi, just peaceful mountain solitude and authentic Swiss hospitality.
