“The scenery each day was different and beautiful. The hiking was enjoyable and well paced by our guides. The passion our guides had for the culture and experience for that day made it extra special." - St Moritz to Italy guest

Switzerland's Engadine Alps to Italy's Lake Como

Three cultures, three languages, and three thousand years of history are all close to the surface as we embark on a trek through Switzerland's Upper Engadine and down the Val Bregaglia to Lake Como. Traverse through German, Romansch, and Italian-speaking villages, all with unique architecture, scenery, and history.

A String of Alpine Lakes

Our trek follows a linear route down the Engadine valley and the Val Bregaglia, which were carved by glaciers. This glacial activity left behind a string of stunning turquoise lakes. We’ll begin on the shores of Lake St. Moritz, then continue past the beautiful Lake Silvaplana and Lake Sils as we traverse above and across this glacial valley. After crossing the Val Bregaglia and entering Italy, we’ll arrive at our final destination: Lake Como. The largest and most well-known of these lakes, Lake Como offers beautiful scenery and vibrant waterfront villages.

Charming Villages in the Swiss & Italian Alps

St. Moritz is legendary among skiers but beautiful and vibrant in the summer. Sils Maria is a perfectly charming Romansch village tucked between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadine. Beyond Sils Maria, you'll trek to the sleepy village of Maloja and the hillside village of Soglio, known as the "threshold to paradise." Continue past Soglio and enter Italy, where you'll stay in the medieval town of Chiavenna before concluding your trek in Varenna, a gorgeous fishing village on the shores of Lake Como.

Where History and Nature Meet

At the Maloja Pass (“ma-LOY-ya”), once a smugglers’ route and now a hub for outdoor relaxation, we stay in a historic hotel. Descending into the peaceful Val Bregaglia (“bray-GAHL-ya”), we pass cobblestone paths, terraced gardens, and elegant palazzos—one of which will be our home for the night. We conclude in historic Varenna, founded by fishermen in AD 769.

Onward to More Adventure

The shores of Lake Como offer the perfect ending to our trek from Switzerland to Italy. Varenna is beautifully scenic and wonderfully Italian. Departure for the Milan airport is convenient, as we provide a train ticket based on your personal flight plans. Guests can also choose to extend their trip on Lake Como if they wish. There is plenty to do in Varenna and the neighboring towns of Menaggio and Bellagio.
